How does it work?
TurnOffScreen is considered by Windows as a screensaver. When your PC is left idle for a certain amount of time, for example when you are far from it or just listening to music, the screensaver is triggered and TurnOffScreen switches the screen off automatically. Otherwise you can click on its button on the Quick Launch Bar, near the Start button, to immediately switch off your monitor. In either case you can switch the monitor back on by pressing any key or moving the mouse.
Why should I use it?
Sometimes switching off your PC’s monitor by physically pressing its power-off button is annoying (i.e. some monitors play a brief music) or just impossible (i.e. you’re using a laptop that has no LCD power-off button). Physical buttons can also be subject to wear and break.
How does TurnOffScreen make me save energy?
TurnOffScreen automatically shuts down monitor after a brief period of time when PC is idle (1 minute by default). It is very likely that if you’re not interacting with your PC for a while it’s because you’re not using it. In these cases shutting down the monitor helps you save energy.
Why should I turn off screen using TurnOffScreen instead of monitor’s button?
It may happen that you don’t have a monitor button at all, for example if you are using a laptop. Even if you have a monitor button it can be safer to avoid using it, since it can be damaged or annoying to use (several monitors take 4-5 seconds to shut down or play a brief melody before).
How can I switch on my monitor once it’s been switched off by TurnOffScreen?
Just move the mouse or press any key.
Why should I use TurnOffScreen instead of relying on MS Windows Power Management?
Power management is based on videocard and monitor drivers. So it can happen that for some reason they’re not working properly. This can lead for example to monitor switching on by itself without any apparent reason and staying on even if you’re not using it. TurnOffScreen is itself a screensaver and depends only on Windows. It does not rely on any external software such as third-parties drivers. Thus it works every time it is supposed to.
How can I set time interval after which TurnOffScreen activates?
Just set it in the Windows screensaver option panel. Start > Control Panel > Display > Screensaver tab.
What’s the difference between unregistered and full version of TurnOffScreen?
Unregistered version is free and switches the monitor back on after 2 minutes it’s been automatically switched off. Manual switch off with quick-launch icon is active in both versions.
Will the nag screen be appearing after I register the full version of TurnOffScreen?
No. After registration no more nag screen will be appearing.
